What Goldman Sachs is

Founded in 1869 and headquartered in New York (200 West Street), Goldman Sachs is a global investment bank active in mergers and acquisitions advisory, securities underwriting, trading, asset management and research across more than 50 economies. In the digital asset market its role is prominent: since 2021 it has run a trading desk for regulated, cash-settled crypto derivatives for institutional clients, has developed the GS DAP tokenisation platform and in 2025-2026 announced expansion into trading, lending and tokenised products (Verified: September 2026). It is not an exchange: a private individual cannot open a crypto account there — its digital activity is aimed at institutions.

Regulation and licences

  • Goldman Sachs is a US bank holding company supervised by the Federal Reserve, with subsidiaries regulated by the SEC, FINRA and — in Europe — by authorities such as BaFin (Goldman Sachs Bank Europe). (Verified: September 2026)
  • MiCA: not applicable in the form envisaged for cryptocurrency exchanges: Goldman does not offer retail crypto services in the EU. Its crypto exposure runs through cash-settled derivatives, ETFs and tokenisation infrastructure for institutions.
  • Key development: the spin-off of GS DAP (a blockchain digital asset platform, developed with partners such as Tradeweb) into an independent, industry-owned company, announced in November 2024 with a completion target of mid-2026 (Verified: September 2026 — the transaction appears to be under way; the closing has not yet been publicly confirmed).

Security

As a systemic bank, the "incidents" chapter is regulatory rather than technological: in 2020 Goldman Sachs closed the 1MDB scandal with US and Malaysian authorities, paying billions in penalties and admitting anti-corruption violations by a subsidiary — an affair concluded with settlement agreements and strengthened compliance programmes. On the digital front there are no known breaches of the bank's crypto custody or trading systems. (Verified: September 2026)

FAQ

  • Does Goldman Sachs let you buy Bitcoin? Not for the retail public: it operates in regulated, cash-settled crypto derivatives for institutional clients and, for private banking clients, in products such as spot ETFs. It does not hold crypto for individuals.
  • What is GS DAP? Goldman's tokenisation platform (issuance and settlement of securities on blockchain). In November 2024 the bank announced its intention to spin it off into an independent company open to the industry, with closing expected in mid-2026.
  • What is Goldman's position on cryptocurrencies? In 2025-2026 the bank identified tokenisation, stablecoins and crypto-linked products as areas of expansion, tying the scale of institutional adoption to regulatory clarity (Verified: September 2026).
