What Bitbuy is
Founded in Toronto in 2016 out of Adam Goldman's startup, Bitbuy is a Canadian platform for buying and selling cryptocurrencies, aimed both at beginners (Bitbuy Express) and at more experienced traders (Bitbuy Pro). It was the first crypto marketplace registered with the Ontario Securities Commission (November 2021), a regulatory first that made it a reference point in the Canadian market. In 2022 it was acquired by the WonderFi group (which also owned Coinsquare); on 1 June 2026 Robinhood completed the acquisition of WonderFi for 250 million Canadian dollars, thereby entering Canada's crypto market: Bitbuy and Coinsquare, with around 300,000 active accounts, are progressively being folded into the Robinhood brand (Verified: September 2026).
Regulation and licences
- MiCA: not applicable — Bitbuy serves the Canadian market and does not offer services in the European Union; the platform is not an option for EU users (Verified: September 2026).
- In Canada: registered with the Ontario Securities Commission as a marketplace/dealer since November 2021 (the country's first) and with FINTRAC as a money services business.
- Ownership: since 1 June 2026 the WonderFi group (Bitbuy + Coinsquare) has been wholly owned by Robinhood; the WonderFi stock was delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange on 2 June 2026. Robinhood has announced the migration of customers to its own app, with a flat 0.5% commission per transaction in CAD (Verified: September 2026).
Security
- A stated policy of cold storage for the vast majority of assets and mandatory 2FA; there are no breaches of customer funds in the platform's history (Verified: September 2026).
- The move to Robinhood shifts custody under the US group's infrastructure: an aspect to monitor as the migration proceeds.
