What Currency.com is

Currency.com is a platform for exchanging cryptocurrencies and tokenised assets launched in March 2019, initially authorised by the Belarusian High Technology Park and linked to entrepreneur Viktor Prokopenya (also the founder of Capital.com). Since 2020 it has operated with a DLT licence in Gibraltar and in 2022 it expanded into the United States. In April 2022, after the invasion of Ukraine, it shut down operations for Russian clients. The decisive change came in 2024: the Capital.com group (VP Capital) completed, after an 18-month authorisation process with 28 US state regulators and the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission, the sale to a group of investors represented by CXNEST Ltd. The new ownership appointed Konstantin Anissimov (formerly CEX.IO) as Global CEO, succeeding Jonathan Squires, and relaunched the platform, including with an investment from N7 Capital aimed at the institutional market. Regulation and licences

  • MiCA-CASP: not found. At the time of verification Currency.com does not appear among the authorised CASPs cited in reviews of the ESMA register; since 01/07/2026 MiCA authorisation is the requirement to legally serve EU clients.
  • Gibraltar: DLT licence with the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission since 2020; the GFSC also approved the change of ownership to CXNEST. (Verified: September 2026)
  • US: operations built on state authorisations (28 regulators involved in the sale process).
  • The original Belarusian authorisation (High Technology Park) no longer describes the current setup: ties with Belarus and with Prokopenya ended with the 2024 sale. (Verified: September 2026)

Security

In April 2022, a few hours after announcing the halt for Russian clients, the platform said it had repelled large-scale cyberattacks, with no reported compromise of funds. There are no breaches of customer funds in the platform's history.

Alternatives

  • Revolut — a multi-asset app regulated in Europe
  • SwissBorg — a European crypto investment platform
  • Kraken — a global exchange with MiCA authorisation

FAQ

Is Currency.com still Prokopenya's "Belarusian" platform? No. Viktor Prokopenya and VP Capital sold Currency.com in 2024 to investors represented by CXNEST Ltd; Prokopenya retains control only of Capital.com. The operational base and the main licence are in Gibraltar. (Verified: September 2026)

Can I use Currency.com from the EU? Since 01/07/2026 an exchange must hold MiCA-CASP authorisation to serve EU clients, and for Currency.com this authorisation does not appear at the time of verification.

Who leads Currency.com today? Konstantin Anissimov, a former CEX.IO executive, appointed Global CEO after the 2024 acquisition. (Verified: September 2026)
