ShapeShift

ShapeShift, launched in 2014 as an instant cryptocurrency conversion service, has not been a company since July 2021: it is an open-source, non-custodial platform governed by the ShapeShift DAO. Founder Erik Voorhees now leads the artificial intelligence startup Venice AI.

What ShapeShift is

Founded in August 2014 by Erik Voorhees, ShapeShift pioneered instant swaps between Bitcoin and altcoins with no registration. In July 2021 the company made a radical choice: it dissolved as a company, distributed the FOX token to users and handed the platform over to the ShapeShift DAO. Today shapeshift.com is an open-source, multichain, non-custodial interface: it aggregates decentralised exchanges and lets users swap assets while keeping ownership of their own keys, with no company holding the funds. It is therefore not a custodial exchange comparable to Kraken or Coinbase: it is a tool for those who practise self-custody. The DAO is active and the platform is online. (Verified: September 2026)

Regulation and licences

  • MiCA: NO — ShapeShift has no CASP licence and there is no record of it applying for one. As a non-custodial interface governed by a DAO, it does not hold customer funds and falls into a regulatory perimeter different from that of a custodial exchange; full decentralisation, however, remains a grey area of the regulation. A user in the EU using it operates in self-custody, without the protections available to customers of authorised CASPs. (Verified: September 2026)
  • March 2024: the old corporate entity (ShapeShift AG) settled with the US SEC for a 275,000 dollar penalty for operating as an unregistered dealer between 2014 and 2021, without admitting wrongdoing. The settlement concerns the pre-DAO era. (Verified: September 2026)

Security

In 2016 the platform suffered an internal theft (by a former employee), recounted publicly by Voorhees himself in a detailed post-mortem: a historical episode of the custodial era, no longer relevant to the current architecture. Since the 2021 transition the platform has been non-custodial: there is no central "treasury" of user funds to breach, and the risks shift to those typical of DeFi (smart contracts, approvals, phishing).

Alternatives

  • ChangeNOW — instant swaps with no registration, ShapeShift's original model
  • Kraken — for those who prefer a MiCA-regulated custodial exchange

FAQ

Is ShapeShift still active? Yes, but not as a company: since July 2021 it has been an open-source platform governed by the ShapeShift DAO through the FOX token. The site is online and working. (Verified: September 2026)

Is KYC required to use ShapeShift? No: being a non-custodial interface, it connects to your wallet with no registration. The history is curious: born without KYC, it introduced it in 2018 amid user protests, and with the 2021 DAO turn it went back to not requiring it.

What became of Erik Voorhees? He stepped back from operational leadership when the DAO was created in 2021. In May 2024 he launched Venice AI, a privacy-focused artificial intelligence platform, of which he is CEO. (Verified: September 2026)
