What SmartFi is

SmartFi was launched from Orem, Utah, by co-founders Aaron J. Tilton and Tom Retson as an "open and self-sustaining" crypto lending platform, with its own exchange and a monetary model hinged on the SMTF token: token sales funded a loan portfolio and the company promised a buyback guarantee at the original price. The project was connected to Power Block Coin LLC and to the energy ecosystem of Blue Castle Holdings, the nuclear company led by Tilton himself. As at 2 September 2026 the smartfi.com homepage returns a 404 error and the SMTF token does not appear in the list of assets catalogued by CoinGecko: the platform appears effectively inactive. (Verified: September 2026 — direct check by the editorial team)

Regulation and licences

  • MiCA: NO — SmartFi is in no way authorised as a CASP in the EU, nor did it ever state an intention to serve the European market under MiCA. (Verified: September 2026)
  • Corporate status: not publicly clarified. The direct checks (site returning an error, token absent from aggregators) indicate activity that has ceased or been suspended, but no formal closure announcement could be found. Until clarified, it should be considered a non-operational service.
  • Even when it was active, SmartFi was not authorised to offer services in the EU.

Security

There are no documented hacks or security incidents. The critical point is a different one: lending models with a "buyback guarantee" on the platform's own token depend entirely on the issuer's solvency, as the sector learned with the collapses of 2022 (Celsius, to name one). With the site unreachable, anyone still holding SMTF tokens has today no evident liquid market on which to sell them. (Verified: September 2026)

Alternatives

  • SwissBorg — a crypto wealth management app regulated under MiCA via France
  • Kraken — an exchange with a full MiCA licence via Ireland

FAQ

Is SmartFi still operating? It does not appear so: as of September 2026 the official site returns a 404 error and the SMTF token is not catalogued on CoinGecko. No official closure announcement, however, could be found. (Verified: September 2026)

What was the SMTF token? A token whose value was explicitly tied to the platform's loan portfolio, sold through the "SmartCycle" mechanism with a promise of buyback at the original purchase price — a promise that holds only as long as the issuer exists and is solvent.
