Who he is

Andre Cronje is one of the best-known developers in decentralised finance. In July 2020 he launched Yearn Finance (originally iEarn), a yield aggregator that also became famous for the "fair launch" of the YFI token, distributed with no share reserved for the founder. From there came an uninterrupted output of protocols — Keep3r, Solidly and others — and the role of technical architect of the Fantom ecosystem, later relaunched as the Sonic network, of which he was CTO from August 2024. A figure as followed as he is divisive, he remains associated with the motto "I test in prod" and a fast, experimental release style. Since 2025 his main project has been Flying Tulip, which aims to bring spot, lending, perpetuals and insurance together in a single cross-margin environment.

Current role

Founder and head of Flying Tulip, a DeFi platform that has raised more than 200 million dollars from institutional investors (including Brevan Howard Digital, DWF Labs and Amber Group) at a fully diluted valuation of 1 billion, with a public sale on CoinList from 3 to 6 February 2026; in mid-2026 it reported around 70 million dollars of TVL across its stablecoin yield products. On 19 June 2026 he left the Sonic Labs board — where he had been CTO since August 2024 — and no longer takes part in the company's decisions. (Verified: September 2026)

Career path

  • July 2020: launch of Yearn Finance and fair launch of YFI, one of the founding moments of "DeFi summer".
  • 2021-2024: architect of the Fantom ecosystem, then CTO of Sonic Labs (from August 2024) for the Sonic network and the Sonic Gateway.
  • 2025-2026: founding of Flying Tulip, raising more than 200 million dollars and public sale on CoinList (February 2026).

Recent developments and controversies

In March 2022 he announced, together with his collaborator Anton Nell, that he was quitting DeFi and stepping back from around twenty applications: the move sent several connected tokens tumbling and fuelled the debate on protocols' dependence on individual founders. He later returned actively to development with Fantom/Sonic. On 19 June 2026 he resigned from the Sonic Labs board to devote himself to Flying Tulip; the announcement came while the network's S token was well down from its highs, a circumstance noted by the industry press. On Flying Tulip he claims real stablecoin yields (around 16% on USDC/USDT on Ethereum in June 2026), figures to be read as project statements, not guarantees. (Verified: September 2026)
