What CoinGecko is
CoinGecko is a cryptocurrency data aggregator founded in April 2014 in Singapore by TM Lee and Bobby Ong. It tracks prices, market capitalisation, volumes and liquidity of thousands of cryptocurrencies across hundreds of exchanges, pairing market numbers with qualitative metrics such as developer activity, community and public interest. It is among the world's most used data sources for investors, media and developers: it offers a widely used commercial API and the GeckoTerminal platform for on-chain DEX data. Unlike many competitors, it has grown without venture capital rounds, remaining controlled by its founders. It is not an exchange: it does not hold funds and does not allow buying or selling cryptocurrencies.
Regulation and licences
CoinGecko provides data and information, not crypto-asset services: it does not hold client funds nor execute orders, so it does not fall among the CASPs subject to MiCA authorisation — the criterion that since 01/07/2026 applies to exchanges operating in the EU does not apply to its main service (Verified: September 2026). This means consulting CoinGecko is like consulting a financial publication: to trade you still need authorised platforms.
Security
In June 2024 CoinGecko disclosed a breach at GetResponse, its third-party email delivery provider: the data of around 1.9 million contacts (names and emails) was exported and phishing emails were sent to around 23,000 addresses. CoinGecko's accounts and systems were not compromised; the company publicly notified the incident and the affected users. As it does not hold funds, the main risk for users remains "airdrop"-themed phishing exploiting its brand.
Alternatives
The Directory does not currently have a profile of another equivalent data aggregator. To trade on the markets (something CoinGecko does not allow), see the profiles of exchanges authorised in the EU: Kraken and Bybit.
