What Animoca Brands is
Animoca Brands is a Hong Kong company founded in 2014 by Yat Siu and David Kim, which has become the world's leading conglomerate in Web3 gaming and digital assets. It develops and publishes blockchain games and products — including The Sandbox (SAND token) and the REVV token — and holds an investment portfolio in more than 600 companies in the sector: from OpenSea to Yield Guild Games, by way of Axie Infinity and Dapper Labs. Over the years it has broadened its scope from NFTs and the metaverse to DeFi, artificial intelligence and tokenisation, positioning itself as a diversified holding company of the digital asset economy. After the NFT- and metaverse-centred phase of 2021-2022, the chapter that matters today is its return to the stock market: the merger with Currenc Group that was meant to take it to Nasdaq was suspended in September 2026.
Regulation and licences
- Animoca Brands is not an exchange: the MiCA regulation does not apply to its development and investment activity.
- Corporate history: listed on Australia's ASX until March 2020, when it was delisted partly because of the Australian exchange's concerns over cryptocurrency-related activities; since then it has remained an unlisted company with operational headquarters in Hong Kong (Verified: September 2026).
- Nasdaq listing suspended: on 3 November 2025 Animoca had signed with Currenc Group, a Singapore fintech company listed on Nasdaq, a non-binding preliminary agreement for a reverse merger that would have given Animoca shareholders around 95% of the new company. The exclusivity period expired on 30 June 2026 without a definitive agreement. On 22 September 2026 the two companies mutually agreed to suspend the talks, which could resume "if and when conditions permit". Animoca says it still intends to return to a major stock exchange and is completing its audited financial statements: those for 2023 were released on 17 July 2026, while those for 2024 are in preparation (Verified: October 2026).

It does not hold retail user funds like an exchange. The significant corporate episode is the delisting from the ASX in 2020, overcome without interrupting operations: the company then raised private capital at valuations of several billion dollars and continued expanding its portfolio.
