The Sui development team consists of five former Meta engineers, who founded Mysten Labs to create and develop this blockchain innovation.
During the initial phase, the project conducted two funding rounds. In December 2021, the developers raised $36m in a Series A round led by the a16z fund (Andreessen Horowitz). Subsequently, in September 2022, the Series B round raised $300 million, bringing Mysten Labs' valuation to $2 billion.
Demand for the SUI token was fuelled by, among other things, the possibility of putting it in staking in cryptographic projects on Sui's blockchain, which in turn distributed airdrops in their own tokens to staking participants.
