Rockbeasts, the rock band management game from Warsaw-based studio Lichthund, now has Critical Role as co-publisher and a January 2027 release window. On October 8, creative director and co-CEO Bartosz Pieczonka confirmed in a PlayStation Blog post that Matthew Mercer and Sam Riegel are joining the voice cast. No release date, no price, and no details on the two actors' characters have been announced yet. What exists today is a partnership, not a launch.

What Is Rockbeasts

Rockbeasts is a management RPG with a choice-driven narrative set in the American grunge scene of the 1990s. As Pieczonka wrote on the PlayStation Blog, players are “neither the frontman nor the drummer, but the manager”: the job is to steer a band from a garage to big stages, juggling resources, personalities, and setbacks. According to the Steam store page, the game features 17 original tracks, over 100 characters, 90 locations, hand-drawn art, and a script by Jakub Szamałek, credited as a writer on The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and the upcoming The Blood of Dawnwalker. The full voice cast, per Steam, includes Mercer, Sam Riegel, Liam O'Brien, and Iggy Pop. Full audio is English-only; the interface supports six languages. The developers flag mature content including crude language and references to tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and sex.

The only independent hands-on available is Gamereactor's preview from March 3, 2026, based on an early build. That write-up described rhythm-based concert minigames loosely comparable to a simplified Guitar Hero, resource management loops. Moral dilemmas, ultimately calling it a “rough diamond.” The reviewer hit a game-breaking bug near the end of the session. That build was seven months old and tells us little about what ships in January.

What Critical Role Brings

Critical Role began in 2015 as a live Dungeons & Dragons show and has since become a full production company. Its properties include animated series on Prime Video, tabletop game publisher Darrington Press, and subscription service Beacon, launched in May 2024, according to the Wikipedia entry on Critical Role Productions. The clearest measure of its audience mobilization is the 2019 Kickstarter campaign for the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina: the campaign opened with a $750,000 goal and closed at $11,385,449, according to Guinness World Records, which listed it as the record for a TV series on Kickstarter at the time.

Gaming is not new territory for Critical Role. According to mxdwn, Rockbeasts is the group's second video game project after Dispatch, made with studio AdHoc. Wikipedia also notes that Critical Role funded Dispatch and in July 2025 announced Exandria, a title set within its own universe. Rockbeasts, by contrast, does not originate from that universe.

On the publishing side, both Steam and Gematsu list Lichthund and Critical Role as co-publishers. What that division means in practice, covering tasks, revenue, and marketing, has not been explained publicly. The PlayStation Store page, checked on October 9, still lists Team17 as publisher and license holder. The October announcements do not mention Team17, and no communication has surfaced to clarify what changed.

Dates, Platforms, Demo, and Price

The window is January 2027. No specific day has been set. According to Gematsu, which covered the October 8 announcement, the game is coming to PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC via Steam. Gematsu does not mention Switch 2, which RPG Site reported as confirmed on December 11, 2025. A demo is already live on Steam; per Gematsu, it is currently PC-only, and it is unclear whether a console demo will follow. The Steam page lists no price. The PlayStation Store listing, checked October 9, shows “release date to be confirmed,” a pending ESRB rating, no price, and only PS5 as the listed platform. It does not reflect the October announcement, and no update timeline has been given.

The schedule has slipped repeatedly. Team17's announcement from February 2025 pointed to a 2025 release on Steam and consoles; Gamereactor's March 2026 preview referred to a 2026 window; the Critical Role partnership announcement moved the target to 2027. On the corporate side, TipRanks, in an automated note on a Lichthund S.A. press release, wrote that the company's board considers the January 2027 window material to future revenue planning, without providing any figures on revenue, costs, or equity. We have not seen the original press release.

Why This Matters Outside Crypto

There is nothing crypto about this story, and that is exactly why we're covering it. None of the sources we reviewed mention a token, an NFT, or a blockchain. Web3 gaming spent years trying to build communities by paying for them with token incentives. The Caladan Report from April 2026 counted 93% of the 3,200 GameFi projects it analyzed as dead, with roughly $15 billion lost, because token systems arrived before playable games did. In July, Yield Guild shut down YGG Play, its Web3 publishing arm, affecting 35 jobs, with the YGG token down 99.8% from its peak. The founders of Notcoin said in 2025 that the tap-to-earn format was probably over.

Rockbeasts takes the opposite path: build the game first, then find an audience, using a creator who presents it to a community that already trusts them. That's our read, and it needs to be measured against actual sales data, which no source has provided. The jump from a live show to a video game audience is not automatic. The case is also useful because it sits entirely outside the rumor cycle that typically surrounds gaming in crypto news, as in last September's fact-check on GTA VI, USDT, and Solana, which found no supporting evidence.

Rockbeasts and Critical Role: what is confirmed

What is confirmed, what is not. Sources: PlayStation Blog, Steam, Gematsu, mxdwn

  • Confirmed: Critical Role is co-publisher with Lichthund. Matthew Mercer and Sam Riegel are in the voice cast. Release window is January 2027. A PC demo is live on Steam. Platforms include PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC per Gematsu.
  • Not announced: Exact release date, price, the two actors' character roles, co-publishing terms, Team17's current status, and Switch 2 support.
  • Watch for: A specific release date, pricing, a console demo, an updated PlayStation Store listing, and Lichthund's original press release.

The Bigger Picture

The most significant part of this news is the distribution strategy, not the cast. A hybrid game that blends management, RPG mechanics, and music is difficult to position in a crowded storefront. A creator with an established, loyal community offers a credible introduction, provided that audience is willing to follow them into a new medium. That's a real question, not a given. Web3 gaming pursued the same kind of trust through different tools: Sorare builds it around licensed digital player cards, and Animoca Brands holds stakes in more than 600 companies in the sector, according to our profile. Rockbeasts, in everything we've read, uses a simpler and older channel: a familiar voice saying “look at this.”

The signals worth tracking are specific: a release date, a price, console demos, clarification on Team17's role, and the public's actual response to the PC demo on Steam. Until those arrive, this story is a publisher partnership with a release window. Nothing more, nothing less.
