Coinbase is deploying AI agents inside its internal Slack channels and email systems, modeled on the personalities of two legendary former executives: Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of Coinbase and current head of Paradigm, and Balaji Srinivasan, former CTO and one of crypto's most provocative thinkers. On April 18, 2026, CEO Brian Armstrong announced on X that the exchange had already begun testing these agents — and predicted that Coinbase will soon have more AI agents than human employees.
Two Agents, Two Mindsets
The choice of these two figures is deliberate. Each agent reflects a distinct operating philosophy that shaped Coinbase's history.
- Fred (the agent) → strategic thinking, priority alignment, C-suite-level feedback on documents and key decisions
- Balaji (the agent) → creative disruption, uncomfortable questions, long-term vision, challenging established assumptions
Coinbase engineer Travis Bloom described his experience with the Balaji agent publicly on X: he shared an idea, and the agent helped him clarify his vision with unexpected depth. Not a generic chatbot — something that genuinely resembled a counterpart with a distinct point of view.
